Life is great!!! As you leave your busy schedule behind and embark on this journey to catch your flight to Leh - the enigma of life strikes you. These are not just words but sheer experiences which one ought to encounter! I bet you, the first thing you do on arrival is to click-click your camera away! Mind you - this is just the start.

The first day spend acclimatizing yourself to the high altitude. Its of paramount importance that you take sufficient rest avoid alcohol and drink a lot of liquids. The next day you will venture out for some local sightseeing of some of the most ancient and beautiful monasteries in Leh viz., Hemis, Shey, Thiksey, Stok Palace. Drive down the beautiful Indus valley with the breathtaking lunar landscape along the way to Lamayuru to visit prominent monasteries of Lamayuru and Alichi. On your return you will also stop at the Magnetic Hill where you will experience your car move upwards against the gravity!! Also halt at the confluence of Zanskar and Indus rivers near Nimmu, visit the interesting Gurudwar Pathar Sahib and the Hall of Fame.

Drive via the world's highest motorable pass - "Khardund-La" to reach the beautiful valley of Nubra where you will camp overnight here. The sand dunes and the double humped Bactrian -camel are the highlights here. Drive back to Leh and the next day you will go on a "not to be missed" day trip to Pangong-Tso driving through Chang-la the 3rd highest motorable road in the world. Rest for a day in Leh before, you journey to the "Mountain-Table" lake - Tso Moriri. You will also halt at the hot spring of Chumathang.

Detailed Itinerary:


On your arrival to Leh by morning flight you will be transferred to your hotel by one of our representatives. Today you will spend the complete day resting to acclimatize to the high altitude of Leh (11,500 ft / 35 00 mtrs). A day's acclimatization is very much needed and recommended to avoid any altitude sickness during your entire trip.

Start your day by visiting the Shey Palace, Thiksey Monastery, Hemis Monastery and Stok Palace Museum. Spend the evening walking through the local markets and discovering the local culture.

In the morning drive down the beautiful Indus valley on a tour of the Lamayuru, famous for the dramatically located ancient Lamayuru-Monastery and the adjoining 'Moonland' features. After sightseeing and lunch here, retrace the Leh route till Uleytokpo and check-in at a fixed camp / resort.

After breakfast drive towards Leh, enroute visiting the 11th century Alchi Choskor, oldest surviving monastic heritage of Ladakh- a UNESCO listed heritage site. Thereafter, halt at Sangam - the confluence of Indus & Zanskar Rivers near Nimmu. You will also stopover Magnetic Point, Gurudwara Pathar Sahib, Kali Mata - Temple of Guardians in Spituk monastery & Hall of Fame.

Today after breakfast we will drive to the ancient Silk Route driving via the highest motorable road on earth - Khardong-la (alt: 18,380 ft). After descending from the pass you will drive on through the picturesque Sumoor area and Samstaling Gompa. Check in for overnight in a fixed camp or hotel.

In the morning visit and explore Deskit Monasrty and Hundar. Enjoy a nice walk on the sand dunes and ride the double-humped Bactrian camel found here (on direct payment). Later drive back to Leh reaching in the late afternoon / evening.

Start early for a full day excursion to Pangong Lake, located on the Indo-China Border. Enroute cross the Chang-la pass (alt: 17370 ft.), the third highest motorable road on earth. After sightseeing around the lake, drive back to Leh, reaching in the evening.

Today is a day free for rest after the long journey to Pangong Lake. In the afternoon visit Shanti Stupa, Sankar Gompa, Leh Palace & the markets.

DAY 09: LEH - TSOMORIRI / KOROZOK (15070 ft. / 220 kms)

Early departure for Tsomoriri Lake (alt: 15,000 ft.). You will drive through Chumathang (hot springs), Mahe and Puga Sumdo. Tsomoriri Lake (28 km long & about 8 km wide) is the breeding ground of many migratory birds including the rare bar-headed geese.

DAY 10: TSOMORIRI - TSOKAR -TAGLANGLA - LEH (17582 ft.)-Leh (200 kms)

After breakfast retrace the route down to Puga Sumdo and then follow the road across the Polokongka Pass (4920 mtrs) to visit Tsokar Lake, a salt lake system in the Rupsho plateau which is home of the Changa nomads and support many rare wild life species. After spending few hours in this area take the Manali-Leh road to return to Leh, crossing Taglang-la (alt: 17,585ft) en- route.

Additional Information about the Destinations

Sigiriya Citadel

Leh the capital of the kingdom of Ladakh is one of the coldest deserts in the world (altitude 3500mt or 11,500ft). The area is bounded by two of the world's largest mountain ranges by height, the Himalayan and the Karakoram Range. Surrounded by alpine desert, dry barren landscape, historic Buddhist monasteries makes Leh an incredible sight to behold. Some of the most popular monasteries/monuments are Shanti Stupa, Hemis Gompa (the wealthiest, oldest and most important monastery in Ladakh), Thiksey Gompa, Stok Palace. Leh serves as an entry point to the Ladakh region and acts as the base camp to explore this region.

Pangong Tso

Pangong Tso is an endorheic lake in the Himalayas situated at a height of about 4,350 m (14,270 ft). The road to Pangong takes you through some of the most beautiful ravines with small streams flowing along the road. On the way you will see numerous mountain horses, yaks and pashmina sheep grazing the green grass along the brooks. This crystal clear lake is 134 km long and extends from India to Tibet, 60% of the length of the lake lies in China and the actual line of control between India and China passes through the lake, you can still many bunkers created by the Indian army during the earlier wars with China. Do make sure to see the sunrise at shores of the lake if you stay overnight at Pangong. The lake completely freezes in winters.

Nubra Valley

The Nubra Valley at 10000 ft is a high altitude desert. Siachen Glacier lies to the north of the valley. The Sasser Pass and the famous Karakoram Pass lie to the northwest of the valley. The road to Nubra passes through Khardung La pass, once used to be known as the highest motorable road in the world (~18,400 ft), this road is strategically important to India as it is used to carry supplies to the Siachen Glacier. This route runs along the Skyok river forming several kilometers of sand dunes on which Bactrian camel (two-humped) can be seen. Rides on these camels can be arranged and should be experienced. At Nubra you will be rewarded with view of water, mountains, pastures and desert all in the one area. There are numerous villages around the desert and if you stay overnight do go out for an early morning walk. Not only will you relish the fresh morning air but will also get a chance to meet the locals see their houses and possibly even try to local fruit harvest of apples, walnuts, apricots. While in the area one can also visit the Chamba Gompa and the Diskit monastery.

  • Make sure you have all your travel documents on you, at all times
  • Try and pick up some phrases in the local dialect prior to undertaking the trip
